Things That Go Bump

A sudden sound shatters the silence
Its shards fall tinkling to the floor
Leaving a sharpness behind.

Startled from slumber
I lie rigid, frozen
In a fragment of eternity
Straining to hear
Over the booming palpitation
Of my trembling heart

My sleep-fogged brain
Belatedly inquires
"Was that the cat?"
